Comments
As the first skier came off of the ridge line, the slab propagated skier's right and up the ridge line. The slab failed at the new snow/old snow interface and was D1 in size. The skier was able to ski out and ahead of the slide without any issue.
What we did wrong: 1. As was discussed in the avy report, there were varying reports on how well the new snow was bonding. As we were ascending the ridge line, small portions of the storm slab (160cm x 20cm) were breaking off on the steeper portions and during kick turns. This was discussed on the climb, but not before descending. 2. While the slope we ultimately skied was about 32 degrees, the slope under the ridge line where the fracture propagated was approaching 40 degrees. 3. Due to poor visibility, partner lost sight of skier as he was descending, although verbal communication remained intact.
What we did right: 1. Overall terrain was mellow with limited consequences. 2. Both skiers carried appropriate safety equipment 3. Skied one at a time with remaining partner able to communicate the slide and prepare for rescue
